Spring Show 2023

Report below

Spring may very well have arrived according to the calendar, but the weather has been anything but spring-like. A dry February was followed by a wet March with cold winds and some low temperatures. With the Spring Show a week later than usual because of Easter there was some concern that the daffodils would be over and the tulips not yet in bloom. However exhibitors scoured their gardens and came up with a surprising number of late flowering daffodils and a range of brightly coloured tulips. Together with a very colourful and varied selection of spring flowers and shrubs the display in the Hall was as good as ever.

Best entry in the daffodil classes went to Derek Chapple for a beautifully arranged display of mixed large cup narcissi and the best entry in the tulip and spring flower/shrub classes went to Harriet Bretherton for a colourful vase of spring shrub flowers. Other interesting exhibits included a Madagascan Palm cactus and a huge Clavia sporting a bright orange flower.

On the domestic side exhibits included a good number of Cherry and Almond cakes and Red Pepper, Onion and Cheese Scones. Janet Pottle was the overall winner in the Domestic Classes with entries of scones, marmalade and chutney.

The Rogers family dominated the Junior classes with Oliver and Peter sharing the cup for the over-7s and Douglas winning the cup for the under-7s.

In the same way the Widdess family dominated the photography classes with Amanda and Jonathan sharing the trophy for the most points. However the Best entry went to Janet Hutton for her photograph of Wall & Brickwork features and patterns.

A huge thanks to all those who exhibited this spring: without them the Show would not be possible.  We would also like to encourage more of you to enter in the future. Whilst some exhibitors are able to submit a number of exhibits and for that we are very thankful we also welcome exhibitors who may only be able to submit a few or even just one entry. All the entries come together to contribute to a successful Show.

Our Shows are not for experts but for the whole community so we hope that you will continue to support them, or if you have not entered before to put in something from your garden, your kitchen or your camera. Thanks also to all those who came to see the Show in the afternoon. It is rewarding for the exhibitors to see their work appreciated by a wider audience. We are also grateful to those who so generously supported the Plant Stall and Raffle and for all those who helped behind the scenes to make the Show a success.
