Spring Show 2022

Report below

The Spring Show gave us another opportunity of returning to the normal Club Programme after the long interruption caused by the various Covid lockdowns and restrictions. We last held a Spring Show three years ago in 2019 so we were somewhat apprehensive as to its success after having to cancel the Show for so long. This was not helped by the recent variable spring weather. A warm spell a few weeks ago brought many spring bulbs and flowers to life early, only for them to be knocked back by more cold weather and sharp frosts compounded by some fierce winds only two days before the Show.

However on the day of the Show we had a really enthusiastic turnout of exhibiters and a wealth of exhibits. Late daffodils and early tulips were the stars of the flower classes with a wide range of varieties and vibrant colours. There were attractive displays of spring and shrub flowers and prizes for best entries went to some frilly bi-coloured double daffodils and some elegant pale yellow polyanthus. Giant pot plants dominated the houseplant class and some spiky cactus provided a fierce end stop to the display. Not to be outdone, the domestic classes gave us a range of delicious cakes, quiches, macaroons, marmalades and chutneys. The photographers excelled themselves with the judge commenting that it was one of the Show’s best displays. Best entry on this occasion went to a shot of a tower silhouetted against the sea at sunset. There was lovely entry of a decorated paper butterfly and 3 gingerbread animals in the Junior classes
